Head to head
Carbon vs the platforms you're shortlisting
Published list prices and real capability, side by side — including the two rows where we lose. Filter by what you care about.
What it actually costs
The single biggest difference is the shape of the bill. Every other vendor here charges by the seat, so the cost of putting your whole team on the system rises with every hire. Carbon charges for the workspace.

The core ERP everyone claims
This is table stakes, and it is where most comparison charts stop. Carbon is deliberately complete here — if a tier only covered half the ledger it would not be an ERP. Read this section to confirm nothing is missing, then read the next one, because that is where the products actually differ.

Where Carbon is a different category
A traditional ERP is a system of record: it remembers what you did. Carbon is a system of work: it also decides what happens next, routes it to a person or an AI employee, and proves who did it. Everything in this section is included in the plan — not an add-on, not a separate product, not a paid automation platform bolted on the side.

Global platforms price in dollars, bill through card rails that fail here, and localise last. Carbon started here.

Where the incumbents still win
Two rows we are not going to pretend about. If either is decisive for you, buy the other product — and if it is not, you are paying a large premium for capability you will never open.

Run your own numbers
What per-seat pricing actually costs you
Pick your headcount. Every other suite here bills by the person, so the gap compounds with every hire — and with every year you stay.

Read the numbers honestly
Software cost is not total cost. NetSuite and SAP Business One are sold with an implementation project, and a $25k–$150k professional-services bill dwarfs the licence line in year one. We have left those out of the table above rather than pick a number that flatters us — add your own quote and the gap widens.
ERPNext really is cheaper than us,and we are not going to pretend otherwise. The licence is free and hosting starts around $5 a month. What you pay instead is engineering time: someone has to install it, configure it, upgrade it, and be on call when it breaks. If you have that person and they enjoy it, ERPNext is a genuinely good answer. If your "IT department" is the founder's cousin, it is the most expensive option on the page.
The per-seat curve is the real story. Every rival here except ERPNext and the accounting-only tools charges more the moment you add a person. That quietly shapes behaviour: teams share logins, keep the warehouse on paper, and leave the shop floor off the system entirely — which is exactly how an ERP ends up describing a version of your business that stopped being true two years ago.
The real comparison
You're not choosing between two ERPs
You're choosing between a system that records what you did and a system that does the next thing. That distinction is worth more than any line in the price table.
What you get from a traditional ERP
A system of record
It remembers. You enter the invoice, it lands in the ledger, and next quarter you can prove what happened. That is genuinely valuable, and every product on this page does it competently — including us.
But a system of record is passive. It will not notice that the stock you promised a customer is committed twice, that the approval has been sitting with someone on leave for nine days, or that your best supplier quietly raised prices 8% across three purchase orders. It knows all of that. It just has no opinion about it.
So the work of running the company stays where it always was: in someone's head, someone's inbox, and a spreadsheet nobody else can open.
What you get from Carbon
A system of work
Carbon records the same things, then does something with them. You draw a process once in the Flow Studio — with real swimlanes, gateways and timers — and the engine runs it forever. When it reaches a human step it lands in that person's My Work inbox with a due date. When it reaches an AI step, an AI employee does the work and stops for approval if the move is irreversible.
That is the whole difference. Not "we added a chatbot" — a governed workforce of people and agents sharing one queue, one permission model and one audit trail. Every AI action is attributable, reversible and gated by risk. Agents earn autonomy on a trust ladder, and you can take it back.
The company stops depending on who remembered to chase what.
What that changes in an ordinary week
Monday
Nobody rebuilds the report. The advisor answers "why did margin move?" from live journals and cites every figure it used, so the number is auditable instead of arguable.
Tuesday
The new hire onboards themselves. Carbonista gives them a role-aware first week — a telemarketer and a controller get different journeys — guided in the real screens, not a PDF.
Wednesday
Stock hits reorder at 2am. A process raises the requisition, routes it to the right approver, and the purchase order goes out before anyone opens a laptop.
Thursday
A campaign burns its budget. The guardrail auto-pauses the placement, opens an approval, and posts the cost-per-lead that triggered it — instead of you finding out from the invoice.
Friday
A customer reports a bad batch. Two clicks of lot genealogy names every affected shipment and customer. The recall takes minutes, not a day of spreadsheets.
Every day
The process map stays true. Because the processes are the software rather than a diagram in a drawer, the map of how you run cannot quietly go stale.
Who should not buy Carbon
We would rather lose the sale than the trust, so here is the short list. Buy something else if:
You need a big app marketplace. Odoo and Zoho have thousands of community apps and connectors. We have an open REST API, webhooks and a growing set of first-party integrations. If your stack depends on a niche connector someone else already wrote, that matters more than anything on this page.
You file tax in a dozen countries. Our tax engine handles VAT, GST, sales tax, withholding, compound and inclusive pricing properly, and the region we serve deeply. It is not a hundred certified localisations. NetSuite and SAP earn their price here.
You only need books. If invoices and a P&L are genuinely the whole job, Xero at $25 is the right answer and we will tell you so. Come back when stock, people or production start hurting.
You have a platform engineer who loves this. Self-host ERPNext. It is good software, the licence is free, and with the right person it is unbeatable value. Without that person it is a second job.
Still here? Then you are the business we built this for: too complex for a books app, too sensible to pay per seat, and tired of being the integration layer between six tools.
